CEC¡¯s Work in the Field of CSR
¡¡¡¡
As the employer organization of China and as an important business association, China Enterprise Confederation/ China Enterprise Director Association (CEC/CEDA) is devoted to promoting CSR (corporate social responsibility)among Chinese enterprises. In China, the strengthening of CSR will contribute to construction of socialist market economy, sustainable development and social development. In this context, the business world should make their own contribution to safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of workers, protecting environment, reasonably allocating resources, maintaining credit standing, improving employment and enhancing community stability. To achieve these goals, and at the same time to enhance China¡¯s influence in international world, CEC became the first national employer organization in the world to support ¡°Global Compact¡±, and plays an key role in promoting ¡°Global Compact¡± in China and launched a lot of campaigns. On December 8 of 2001, CEC co-organized ¡°Chinese Business in the New World¡± seminar with UN in Beijing. In the meanwhile,CEC actively encourages, supports and helps Chinese enterprises to participate in ¡°Global Compact¡±, urges Chinese enterprises to grasp this opportunity to incorporate the concept of CSR into the operation of business along with the efforts to run their business well, so that Chinese enterprises can set up good corporate image, improve their status internationally and get opportunity to involve themselves in international affairs. CEC¡¯s outstanding achievements in promoting ¡°Global Compact¡± has been fully recognized by the UN. On January 20 of 2002, Secretary General of UN Mr. Annan wrote a letter to President of CEC Mr. Chen Jinhua in which he highly commended CEC¡¯s contribution. He also said in the letter,¡± Dear Mr. Chen, I would like to express my appreciation to you for co-hosting, with the United Nations, the ¡°Chinese Business in the New world¡± forum in support of the Global Compact. The fact that so many people participated in the event-business leaders from China and other countries, as well we prominent academics and heads of civil society organizations-showed not only the relevance of the subject, but also the fine organizational work carried out by you and your colleagues. Your own opening address, setting out your strong commitment to the Compact, also contributed greatly to the success of the gathering. Thank you again for the support provided by the China Enterprise Confederation. I hope others in China and elsewhere will follow this fine example¡±.

¡ô On December 8 of 2001, CEC co-organized ¡°Chinese Business in the New World¡± seminar with UN in Beijing. Mr. Chen Jinhua, Vice chairman of CPPCC and President of CEC, Mr. Deng Pufang, Chairman of China Federation of Disabled Persons, Mr. Lu Jiafu, Vice Governor of Anhui Province, Mr. Cheng Lu, Secretary General of All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, Ms. Kerstin Leitner, Chief coordinator of UN institutions in China and representative of UNDP in China and Mr. Du Huixian, official of UN Secretary General Office and Global Compact Office attended the seminar, together with senior executives from more than 100 companies.
¡ôFrom 2001 to 2002, CEC translated, edited and published series of papers and case study books like ¡°Corporate Social Responsibility¡± and ¡°CSR for Multinationals¡±, cooperating with the UN.
¡ôOn September 27 of 2002, CEC co-organized ¡°Social Responsibility for Chinese Entrepreneurs in 21st Century¡± in Xi¡¯an of Shann¡¯ xi Province, together with UNDP and China Society of Promotion of The Guangcai Program. Mr. Chen Lantong, Executive vice president and Director General of CEC, presented himself and made opening address in the seminar.Ms.Kerstin Leitner, Chief coordinator of UN institutions in China and representative of UNDP in China, Mr. Hu Deping, Vice president of CSPGP and Mr. Jia Zhibang, Vice Secretary-General of Shann¡¯ xi Province attended it and made address as well.
¡ôOn December 6 of 2002, CEC and British Government organized ¡°Global Compact-CSR Seminar in China¡± in Beijing.
¡ôFrom 2002 to April of 2003, CEC compiled ¡°Chinese CSR Cases¡±, sponsored by State for foreign and Common Wealth of Britain.
¡ôFrom 24 to 25 of October in 2003, CEC and ILO organized ¡°the 1st Employer Forum¡± in Beijing.
¡ôOn June 24 of 2004, a delegation of 12 people led by Executive president of CEC Mr. Zhang Yanning attended UN ¡°Global Compact Summit¡± in New York, in which Secretary General of UN Mr. Annan made keynote speech. CEC¡¯s delegation was composed of people from Sinopec, Bao Steel Group and China International Marine Containers Group,etc.. In this conference, the principle of ¡°Anti-corruption¡± was adopted and added to the Global Compact principles as the tenth one.
¡ôOn October 11 of 2004, Mr. Kofi.Annan who was visiting China met Chinese business representatives in Beijing and discussed issues like¡± Global Compact¡± and partnership between public sector and private sector. This meeting was chaired by Mr. Hu Deping, Vice president of CSPGP. Secretary General Mr. Annan and President Mr. Chen Jinhua made key address. Mr. Chen Lantong, Executive vice president and Director General of CEC, Madame Chen Ying, Deputy Director General and Mr. Wang Guangya, China¡¯s permanent Ambassador in UN and over 30 representatives from all over China and Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR attended the meeting. Business People at the meeting are Mr. Wang Jiming, Vice board chairman and CEO of Sinopec, Madame Xie Qihua, Board Chairman and General Manager of Bao Steel, Mr. Wei Jiafu, CEO of China Ocean Shipping Group, Mr. Qin Jiaming, General Manager of China Railway Engineering Group, Mr. Wang Yi, Board chairman of Jincheng International Credit Management Company, Madame Lei Jufang, Board chairman of Cheezheng Group, Mr.Yin Mingshan, Board Chairman of Chongqing LifanGroup, Mr. Liu Yonghao, Board Chairman of New Hope Group, Mr. Yan Xijun, Board Chairman of Tianjin Tasly Group, Madame Wu Shuqing, vice board Chairman of Hong Kong Beijing Air Catering Company and Mr. Ma Zhengshu, Board Chairman of Yunnan Hongyu Group introduced their stories of developing business, undertaking CSR and engaging in public affairs.
¡ôIn November of 2004, CEC held ¡°the 2nd Employer Forum¡± under the theme of ¡°CSR and Risk Management in Business¡± in Beijing together with ILO. More than 150 enterprises attended the meeting.
¡ôIn January of 2005, Global Compact Promotion Office was established in CEC.
¡ôFrom October of 2004 to December of 2005, Global Compact Promotion Office of CEC made research on technical standards of CSR under Global Compact with the support of experts and scholars and produced CSR general rules under Global Compact, CSR guarantee guiding rules under Global Compact, guiding rules for annual report on CSR under Global Compact and rules for assessing corporate management structure and conditions of work. In the meanwhile, CEC produced series of training materials on CSR under the Global Compact.
¡ôIn April of 2005, Deputy Director General of CEC Madame Chen Ying, as a member of China CSR expert panel, joined International Standard Committee for formulating ISO26000.
¡ôFrom September 5 to 7 of 2005, CEC Global Compact Promotion Office participated in ¡°21st Century Forum¡± held by CPPCC; this forum is under the theme of Sustainable Development-China and the World. As one of civil societies in the afterward exhibition, CEC was the only one exhibiting its achievement on CSR and got good feedback for people from all circles.
¡ôIn September of 2005, the Office co-organized ¡°Sino-Swiss Enterprises Senior Seminar on CSR¡±.
¡ôIn October of 2005, ¡°The 3rd Employer Forum¡± was held in Beijing under the theme of CSR and Harmonious Society. Representatives from more than 240 enterprises attended the meeting and 96 enterprises are awarded for good labor relations.
¡ôFrom November 29 to December 1 of 2005, as one of co-organizers, CEC played a key role in working with UN organizing ¡°Global Compact China Summit¡±.
